Performances & Workshop

CELEBRATION:

Once we have been educated and can appreciate others culture it is time to celebrate.  Batingua Arts believe that cultural Arts Exchange should be a celebratory process.  This is evident in every workshop, performance and residency conducted by Batingua Arts.  Every workshop ends with a traditional African celebratory circle.  Every performance ends with a high energy, electrifying piece that gets the audience up on its feet, clapping, singing and dancing.

Through our research we understand that it was with song, music and dance that our ancestors were able to hold on to bits and pieces of their traditions by masking them in celebrations.  During slavery in Africa and the Caribbean as well as the civil rights era right here in the U.S. people used songs and dance to keep them motivated, to persevere through the unbearable circumstances they had to endure.  Even today, despite many issues both personal and global that we face, the beauty of people in unity dancing, singing and drumming is a reason to celebrate.

Batingua Dance & Productions LLC Workshops.

AFRICA SPEAKS

Understand African culture through its dances, drums and songs. Listen to the rhythm of the drums, thestory in the songs and watch the vivacious steps from the dances of West Africa (Ivory Coast, Guinea, Mali).  In this lively performance, students observe traditional Ivorian masks come to life on stage. Performance includes an explanation of the origin of each dance and audience participation.

CONNECTING CULTURES THROUGH THE ARTS

Experience a multitude of cultural dances all in one show. Travel to various regions such as France, Africa, Brazil, Haiti, Middle East and finally back home to America. Students explore dance styles and make connections throughout these varied regions.  Performance followed by discussion on the similarities and differences in cultural dance styles.

" I CAN DO THAT" - CULTURAL DANCE WORKSHOPS

Movement workshops for all ages and all levels. Can even be offered as a professional development to demonstrate how teachers can use movement in the classroom. Choose from a variety of dance styles:  West African dance and drumming, Haitian, tap, ballet, modern, creative movement, praise dance etc…,step, hip hop, Afro-Caribbean ....cultural dance workshops include history of dance styles and songs.

Let the Drums Tell the Story

West African Drum Workshop: Hear the sweet percussive sound of the Djembe Drum.  Learn how the drum is made, how it is used as a mean of communication and celebration in Africa and the connection between the drum and dance.  This workshop can be designed as a lecture, a drumming workshop or a little bit of both.  It is interactive, entertaining and enlightening.  Audience members will get a chance to touch and play the drums.

Batingua Dance & Productions LLC is committed to sharing and exposing African and Afro-Caribbean Arts to both children and adults.  Our performances are enthusiastic, fast paced and memorable.  They are guaranteed to keep the audience on their feet, moving, clapping and singing to the rich cultural beats.
